I want to thank Bonnie Ruggles for sharing her short-term mission story. I met Bonnie last October at In Motion Ministries’ Leadership training weekend in CO. I was excited to meet another awesome Christian lady that was willing to be obedient to the Lord and serve on short-term mission trips! Her story is in her own words.
Please read her story and be inspired to go on a trip in 2019!
I was blessed to have grown up in a Christian family and accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was 11…. Fast forward a few decades where I had, for the most part, turned my back on the Lord, …. When I was 50, I had gone through several major life changing events which brought me running back to Jesus; that in turn, brought me to my life-giving Bible based church.
My church is active in serving and mission opportunities. There were teams going to Romania, Cambodia and Peru. It was always a scary thought of me going on a trip and I originally couldn’t fathom the thought of me participating. Each year opportunities arose and my thoughts changed to…”They are going to Peru, but won’t be able to visit Machu Picchu?” Then I thought to myself, “I guess my heart isn’t in the right place to serve, if that comes to mind first, huh?”
Going to Alaska, not one time but twice!
In 2017 when my church announced the trips scheduled, one was to Alaska. God spoke to my heart and told me, “You go; this is yours.” In Motion Ministries facilitated a trip for us to serve in Anchorage with Grace Works who organize a children’s backyard Bible school and summer feeding program in parks in the low income areas of the city. The In Motion Ministries leaders prepared us to share Vacation Bible School type of songs and skits. Our group was assigned to one city park, where we went every day and did crafts with the kids and played games. We also brought lunch we had prepared at Grace Works home base. It was an excellent program and a wonderful experience, especially for a first timer of 57 years of age.….
After that I was hooked.
When you go on a mission trip, you become focused on the mission without the distractions of what is going on at home. You experience devotions prepared by your team members; testimonies and discussions follow like none you do at home. Your bonding with fellow believers is heartwarming. Most importantly, you grow in your relationship with our Precious Lord exponentially.
2018 brought me to remote interior Alaska, to the village of Rampart, facilitated by In Motion Ministries and hosted by Last Frontier Ministries. We journeyed on a three hour drive North of Fairbanks (up the Ice Road Truckers Highway) and a two hour trip down the Yukon River in a 26 foot flat bottom boat to Rampart. We were blessed to be allowed to share in the small native village that has no Church, with a children’s ministry program and work projects for some of the Elders. No place better to give it all to God!
But wait…. 2019 will be a women’s ministry in Montana! God is good all the time and everywhere. Get over yourself and go – You will be glad you did!
